For this project, we were inspired by Jane Kaufmann and her clay sculptures with stories carved in them. Chuck Chamberlain was her first clay instructor and he was the one who inspired her to make story sculptures. She started carving words into clay in 1968. When I started this project the first thing that came to mind was Dr. Seuss. I love reading Dr. Seuss's books and remember them being some of the first books I read. I made a cube out of slabs of clay. Each side of the box has a different Dr. Seuss story on it. On the top is Cat in the Hat. I made the cat's hat and a smaller box where thing one and thing two are hiding behind a sign. On one of the sides is the Grinch. He's coming out of a chimney with the sack of presents. The Lorax is on another side and he's standing on a stump trying to save the last tree. On the back is Oh the Places you'll go. It was inspired by the cover, but instead of it being flat it's 3D. and on the last side is the cover of One fish Two fish Red fish Blue fish. It's my favorite Dr. Seuss book, I took my favorite line from the book and painted on the words.
