For this project I decided to do a puzzle. I used the CNC router. In order to use this machine, I had to create my puzzle on the computer in a program called VCarve. It took me a while to figure out how to use the program. Eventually I figured it out. After I had my template all planned out, I used a scrap piece of wood to test out the Shopbot router. Once the tested piece was finished I decided that I wanted a smaller bit size, and that I wanted the router to carve deeper. Something went wrong when the router was cutting out the lines and it carved an extra line across the bottom. It didn't mess my project up too much, I just went with it. I sketched my sunmoon onto the puzzle, then I carved the second set of sun rays lower to add some dimension to the piece. It was a little difficult to carve out this piece of wood. Then I painted everything. After everything was painted I cut off the extra wood and painted the edges black. I used polyurethane after the paint dried to add some shine to overall piece. I really liked how this project turned out. I got to use some equipment that I've never used before. I was one of the first students at South Central who used this program and router. It was trial and error at first, but the end result was very good.
